My oldest daughter and I are often told how much she looks like me. She and I have similar personalities. More often than not, we say the same things at the same time (at which she rolls her eyes). And as much as I cherish our similarities, it is not me that I want my children to reflect. My primary role as their mother is not to, contrary to popular belief, raise our children to be happy. Of course I want that for them. However, my ultimate goal as a parent is to raise children who know to Whom they belong.
When you see your reflection in the mirror, what do you see? For me, I sometimes now notice a little extra “sparkle” in a strand or two of my hair or this wrinkle above my left eye from too many years of furrowing my brow. Neither of those things say very much about who I am or who I was created to be. So, who am I? Here is who the Bible says I am:
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” – Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV)
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” – Psalm 139:13-14
This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to share for just a moment about the Sanctity of Human Life – a day set aside to celebrate God’s gift of life, commit to the many lives lost to abortion and commit to protecting human life at every stage – and Human Trafficking Awareness – a day set aside to shine a light on the slavery that exists yet today. The value placed on human life seems to have diminished, even over the course of my lifetime. As a society, we have become desensitized to the heinous acts being committed against our fellow man. We have become something of a bandwagon community, growing very upset very quickly over an injustice and forgetting about it weeks later when it is no longer making media headlines.
I can say this with certainty, God does not forget the lives lost to abortion nor does He turn a blind eye to the over 27 million people who are trapped in bondage across the globe. Per www.a21.org, every 30 seconds someone falls victim to trafficking. The average age of a trafficking victim is 12 years old. These are people. These are people who were also created in the image of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Christine Caine has become one of my favorite authors and speakers. She is passionate about God and God’s people. She is the founder of the A21 Campaign and is committed to ending human trafficking. In her book Undaunted, she told a story of a woman who had been freed from sex slavery. What this woman had experienced was horrifying. She was not treated like a person. As a matter of fact, she was abused into believing that she had no worth. She had been dehumanized. When she was rescued, she asked her rescuers, “Where have you been? Why didn’t you come sooner?” To which they replied an honest, “I don’t know.”
When Jesus was asked by his disciples when had they not cared for him when he was hungry or thirsty, sick or without clothing, He said to them, “…as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.”
Unborn babies. 12-year-old girls trapped as sex slaves. Teenage boys forced to work for hours without sustenance. The least of these.
They are without voices. They cannot defend themselves. They cannot free themselves.
This is a call to action. Where are you being called to help the least of these? As I challenged our church on Sunday, there are many ways to get involved: donate money, donate time, come alongside a woman who has unexpectedly found herself pregnant, help someone to find healing from a past abortion. During a conversation with the executive director from Amnion Crisis Pregnancy Center, she shared with me that a growing number of their clients are married Christian adults who do not know how to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. Let’s be a people who values human life, created in the image of God.

We can pray! And we pray to a big God, the Creator of all. This God we serve has called us to take action, to be not only hearers of the Word, but doers.
